North Korea is certainly one of the most unique countries I’ve ever visited. The country has remained relatively isolated from much of the outside world for decades, which gives a visit here a very different atmosphere from almost anywhere else I’ve traveled. North Korea has developed with limited foreign influence, and many aspects of its architecture, monuments, traditions, and daily life are distinctly its own. Traveling here provided an opportunity to experience a country that relatively few international travelers have visited.
Explore Pyongyang
Pyongyang is North Korea’s capital and largest city. After decades of relatively limited contact with much of the outside world, the city has developed a distinctive appearance and atmosphere. Wide boulevards, large public squares, monuments, museums, and distinctive architecture are found throughout the capital. For travelers, Pyongyang provides an introduction to the country’s history, culture, and modern development.
Explore Myohyang
One of North Korea’s well-known scenic areas, Mount Myohyang is located in the northwestern part of the country. The mountain is home to the historic Pohyon Temple, which was founded during the 11th century and contains several important Buddhist structures and cultural artifacts. The surrounding mountains also have hiking trails that pass through forests, valleys, and waterfalls, making Myohyang one of the country’s notable natural destinations.
Explore Kaesong
Kaesong is a historic city located near the border with South Korea. It served as the capital of the Goryeo dynasty and remains one of the country’s most important places for exploring Korean history. The city and surrounding area contain historic buildings, tombs, monuments, and other sites connected with the Goryeo period. Its location near the Korean Demilitarized Zone also makes Kaesong a unique destination within North Korea.
Explore Nampo
Nampo is one of North Korea’s major port cities and is located on the country’s western side near the Yellow Sea. One of the area’s best-known landmarks is the West Sea Barrage, a large system of dams and locks constructed across the Taedong River estuary. Other places of interest around Nampo include the surrounding countryside, coastal areas, salt fields, and hot spring resorts.
