The United Arab Emirates, commonly known as the UAE, has transformed in just a few decades from a collection of desert settlements, trading ports, and coastal communities into one of the most modern countries in the Middle East. Oil wealth helped finance much of this development, while investments in aviation, tourism, finance, and real estate have turned cities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi into international destinations.
Traveling through the UAE, I was struck by the contrast between its enormous skyscrapers, luxury hotels, and ambitious construction projects and the traditional architecture, historic forts, and desert landscapes that remain beyond the modern city centers. Dubai seemed determined to build the biggest and most unusual attractions imaginable, Abu Dhabi impressed me with its monumental architecture and carefully maintained public spaces, and Al Ain offered a much closer look at the country’s older history.
I visited during Ramadan, which made the experience particularly interesting as I saw how Islamic traditions shaped everyday life in a country with such a large international population. Between the coastal cities, indoor ski slopes, historic sites, and desert oases, the UAE turned out to be far more varied than I had expected.
Explore Dubai
Dubai is the UAE’s best-known tourism destination, famous for its futuristic skyline, luxury hotels, beaches, enormous shopping malls, and ambitious engineering projects. The Burj Khalifa dominates the city as the world’s tallest building, while artificial island developments such as Palm Jumeirah have dramatically reshaped the coastline.
Beyond its skyscrapers, Dubai offers an extraordinary range of attractions, from waterfront resorts and desert excursions to the indoor slopes of Ski Dubai at the Mall of the Emirates. The neighboring emirate of Sharjah provides a contrasting atmosphere, with a more traditional urban landscape, cultural attractions, and waterfront neighborhoods. Together, Dubai and Sharjah reveal two different sides of the rapidly developing UAE.
Explore Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi is the capital of the United Arab Emirates and the center of the country’s federal government. Located along the Persian Gulf, the city combines modern high-rise districts, landscaped parks, waterfront promenades, and some of the country’s most impressive architecture. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is among its most recognizable landmarks, celebrated for its white marble domes, towering minarets, and elaborate design.
The city’s monumental buildings include Emirates Palace, a luxury hotel known for its lavish architecture and extensive grounds. Abu Dhabi also preserves elements of the region’s heritage through attractions such as Heritage Village, which introduces traditional Emirati crafts and ways of life. With its combination of modern development, religious landmarks, cultural sites, and coastal scenery, the capital offers an experience distinct from neighboring Dubai.
Explore Al Ain
Situated inland near the border with Oman, Al Ain offers a quieter and more historically focused alternative to the UAE’s coastal cities. Known as the Garden City for its extensive palm groves and greenery, Al Ain developed around natural water sources and ancient irrigation systems that supported settlements in an otherwise arid landscape.
Its historic attractions include Al Jahili Fort, traditional museums, and Hili Archaeological Park, where archaeological remains reveal thousands of years of human settlement. The Al Ain Oasis, part of the UNESCO-listed Cultural Sites of Al Ain, preserves an extensive network of date palm plantations and traditional falaj irrigation channels. Surrounded by rocky desert landscapes and the mountains near Oman, Al Ain provides one of the country’s strongest connections to its pre-oil history and cultural heritage.
