One of the places I was most excited to explore in Slovakia was the Tatra Mountains. After spending time walking around Bratislava, getting into the mountains gave me a completely different look at the country. I came here to do some rock climbing, although the route I climbed was on the easy side. Most of the ascent felt more like scrambling than technical climbing, with only a few sections where I really had to think about the moves.

The scenery was one of the best parts of the climb. The Tatras rise sharply above the surrounding valleys, with exposed rock, steep ridges, and patches of evergreen vegetation covering the lower slopes. As I gained elevation, the views opened up across more of the surrounding peaks.

The route itself never became extremely difficult. The hardest move was probably around a 5.7, while much of the rest was straightforward scrambling over the rock. That made it a fun climb where I could spend plenty of time looking around at the mountains instead of concentrating on difficult moves the entire way.

Gerlachovský štít was one of the dramatic peaks visible in the mountain scenery. The combination of steep rock faces and deep valleys made the Tatras feel much more rugged than their elevation alone might suggest. Even on an easier climb, there was no shortage of impressive mountain terrain around me.

By the time I finished, the climbing itself had been fairly relaxed, but that was part of what made the day enjoyable. I still got to spend the day moving over rock in the mountains, with waterfalls, valleys, and some of Slovakia’s highest peaks surrounding me.
