Dover is a small city in the heart of Delaware, with a population of around 40,000 people. As a state capital, it’s one of the smaller ones in the country, but it still has one of my favorite capitol buildings. Unlike the Neoclassical style found in many state capitals, Delaware’s Legislative Hall was built in the Colonial Revival style. I’ve visited Dover twice and am still pretty upset that I lost my original photos from my first trip. The best I could provide from that visit was a lower-resolution photo taken in early spring, when beautiful flowers lined the sides of the building. I returned about ten years later in late spring to explore the city again.
Dover is one of America’s older cities, so despite its small size, it’s still full of history. It was founded in 1683, while the region was still part of the English colonies. Most buildings from that time are long gone, but the Old State House has stood here since the late 1700s and is another one of my favorite buildings in the state.
I can’t claim that I did much during either of my trips to Dover. The nearby Air Mobility Command Museum seems to be one of the more popular attractions, so that will have to wait for trip number three! Otherwise, I mostly enjoyed walking around the city center, which didn’t have too much going on during my Sunday visit. The photos above and below are from Dover’s central square, known as The Green. The buildings below might look like homes, but many are actually businesses and offices.
The area around the city center is also home to several memorials. Above is the firefighters memorial, with the police memorial photographed below.
Clearly Dover is a place I’ll have to visit properly one day. My only other photos from the trip show one of the quiet commercial streets during the weekend and some of the spring flowers I came across while walking around the city.
