My first trip through Eastern Europe ended with a few days in Budapest, Hungary’s capital. After traveling through countries farther east, Hungary felt noticeably more like Western Europe. Budapest had a well-developed tourist infrastructure, plenty of international visitors, and countless opportunities to meet other travelers.
Earlier in the trip, I had spent much of my time navigating language barriers, asking for directions, and finding my way through places that saw relatively few tourists. Those experiences were rewarding, but arriving in Budapest reminded me how carefree and enjoyable traveling through a major international destination could be. It was a fitting way to finish my journey through Eastern Europe.
Explore Budapest
Budapest is Hungary’s capital and largest city, renowned for its grand architecture, historic landmarks, thermal baths, and vibrant cultural life. The Danube River divides the city into Buda on the western bank and Pest on the eastern bank, each with its own distinctive character. Highlights include the Hungarian Parliament Building, Buda Castle, and the bridges connecting the two sides of the city. Vajdahunyad Castle, the Cave Church inside Gellért Hill, and scenic walks along the Danube offer additional opportunities to explore Budapest’s history and architecture.
