Senegal is one of West Africa’s most stable and well-known countries, offering a wide variety of experiences for travelers. Much of the population is concentrated along the coast, where you’ll find the capital, historic colonial towns and islands, and miles of Atlantic shoreline. Beaches, sailing, and scuba diving are all possible along the coast, while traveling farther inland reveals a very different side of the country, with open landscapes, smaller communities, and opportunities to see African wildlife. Explore Dakar
Dakar is the major city of Senegal and one of the most important cities in West Africa. For some travelers that means crowds and traffic, but it also means a sprawling city with numerous neighborhoods, markets, restaurants, and historic sites to explore. Sitting at the tip of the Cap-Vert Peninsula, Dakar includes the westernmost point of mainland Africa and overlooks the Atlantic Ocean on several sides. The city is also home to the enormous African Renaissance Monument and serves as the cultural and economic center of the country.
Explore Gorée Island
Just off the coast of Dakar, Gorée Island is one of Senegal’s most famous historic destinations. The island is reached by ferry and is small enough to explore on foot, with colorful colonial buildings, narrow streets, restaurants, and places to stay. Much of its significance comes from its connection to the history of the Atlantic slave trade, which is preserved through museums and historic sites on the island. Combined with its colonial architecture and oceanfront setting, Gorée makes for a completely different experience from nearby Dakar.
