Southern Asia is mostly dominated by India, which has enough languages and culture to form several new countries by itself. Most of the region was controlled by Britain in the mid 19th century until gaining its independence in 1947. From there Pakistan was created which also controlled Bangladesh for a time. Due to frequent fighting between different tribes, extremism and the US war on terror, Afghanistan and Pakistan are considered by many to be in the top 5 most dangerous places to travel to. Other parts of southern Asia are great places to visit to see cities Bali and Mumbai, relax in the beaches of Sri Lanka and Maldives, or explore the Himalayan mountains in India, Nepal and Bhutan. My first travels to southern Asia were to help with the tsunami in Sri Lanka back in Jan of 2005 where I didn't get to do much touristy stuff, so I'll definitely have to return. In September 08 I did a two week vacation to Afghanistan.
