Rhode Island
Rhode Island is the country's smallest state and is located in New England. Even though its name is Rhode Island, the majority of the state is
actually part of mainland America, and it is not a separate island. The first Europeans to arrive to this state first noted Block Island, and
found it to be of the similar size of the island Rhodes which is in Greece. The entire state then got the name Rhode Island. Rhode Island
does have some very cold weather in the winter, but because it is such a small state, you are always less than 30 minutes from the Ocean,
making it known as the "Ocean State".
Providence was founded in the mid 1630s by people who had been exiled from Massachusetts by the Puritans. It
was named Providence because of God's "Merciful Providence" in guiding the people to find a new place to settle.
Rhode Island originally had 5 capitals, it was not until 1900 that Providence remained the only official capital. The
upper left photo is Rhode Island's state capital building. Above is a public library in the city center.
Above are photos of downtown Providence, Rhode Island's capital. This city is the second largest in New England in
terms of population, passed only by Boston Massachusetts. Providence is also home to the oldest baptist church in
the new world that was founded by Roger Williams, who had also founded the capital.
On the left is a man working in a café in downtown Providence. I stopped there with my friend to get a break from
the cold. On the right the statue in front of the station building is a memorial for the first world war.
Rhode Island has many resorts that are popular in the summer. These two photos above are both resorts located
near the large city of Newport. Newport is Rhode Island's second biggest city and is on an island.
The long bridge on the left is what connects Newport to the rest of the state. On the right is another photo of
Newport. Today Newport is still the home of the United States Naval College and has many training facilities.
Rhode Island is a very popular place for sailing. The two photos above are both from the city called Warwick. On
the left are some yachts that are anchored down. On the right are some large houses right on the Ocean.

memorial dedicated to the veterans of Jamestown which is located in Newport County. At one point, Newport was
the 4th richest city in America, and it was captured by the British during the Revolutionary War. It was later used as
the French naval base for the Revolutionary War after they joined the war on the American's side.
