Rhode Island is the country's smallest state and is located in New England. Even though its name is Rhode Island, the majority of the state is actually part of mainland America, and it is not a separate island. The first Europeans to arrive to this state first noted Block Island, and found it to be of the similar size of the island Rhodes which is in Greece. The entire state then got the name Rhode Island. Rhode Island does have some very cold weather in the winter, but because it is such a small state, you are always less than 30 minutes from the Ocean, making it known as the "Ocean State".
