Once Australia itself was considered an entire continent, but as all the surrounding countries east of Australia began to be felt left out, they recently have grouped them all together to form the continent of Oceania. As you can see in the map above, there are lots of island nations here, and several of them are owned by western nations such as the US, the UK, and France. Indonesia occuppies part Oceania by controlling the western half of the island of New Guinea.

There are colder parts such as Tasmania and New Zealand, but for the most part Oceania is generally made up of small tropical islands in the western Pacific Ocean. Another exception with weather is the mountains of New Guinea which rise just short of 5,000 meters and are one of the few places you'll find snow on the equator. The summit of Oceania is known as Carstensz Pyramid and I climbed it in October of 2011.
