There are 8 species of whales in Antarctica. Unfortunately since I didn't go scuba diving I could only see them when they surface and saw only two species. I had some difficulty getting pictures of whales since they usually didn't surface for long. The only real picture you can do of a whale while you are on the ground is a tail shot before they are diving. On the right are two humpbacks that were resting next to each other on the surface. On the left is a humpback whale diving in the distance, you barely make out its tale sticking out of the water.

The next two are both of humpback whales again. They were very popular in Antarctica and I saw them almost daily. The first picture you can see the whale's back coming out of the water, they got their name because of the high arch they form before the dive. On the right is the whale's 'face'. We came to a stop in a small zodiac boat and the whale came out to take a look and actually stayed with us for a while.
These are some terrible pictures of Minke whales. I could tell a big difference in their behavior from humpback whales. Humpbacks would surface and hang out more, Minke's would come up and go right back down, then a few minutes later come up a 100 feet away. Taking pictures of them was hard since their appearances were so random and quick. About half a million Minke whales live around the world.
