The white continent and the frozen waters off its coast are home to eight species of whales. Since I didn't go scuba diving while in Antarctica, my only chance of spotting whales was when they surface. I had some difficulty getting any kind of respectable photos of whales since they usually didn't surface for long, and I didn't have a good zoom lens or camera at the time. The only real photo you can capture of a whale while you are on the ground is a tail shot before they are diving, or if you can get close enough . On the right are two humpbacks that were resting next to each other on the surface. On the left is a humpback whale diving in the distance, you barely make out its tale sticking out of the water.

The next two are both of humpback whales again. They were very popular in Antarctica and I saw them almost daily. The first picture you can see the whale's back coming out of the water, they got their name because of the high arch they form before the dive. On the right is the whale's 'face'. We came to a stop in a small zodiac boat and the whale came out to take a look and actually stayed with us for a while.

These are some terrible pictures of Minke whales. I could tell a big difference in their behavior from humpback whales. Humpbacks would surface and hang out more, Minke's would come up and go right back down, then a few minutes later come up a 100 feet away. Taking pictures of them was hard since their appearances were so random and quick. About half a million Minke whales live around the world.
